Grachan Moncur III - Evolution (1963)

Grachan Moncur III is another unsung hero of jazz whose extensive body of work has largely gone out of print.

Moncur was a trombonist who established himself as a sideman for other famous jazz musicians—most famously saxophonist Jackie McLean on his records One Step Beyond and Destination Out. He was even the composer behind the spectacular "Kahlil The Prophet" on Destination Out.

In 1963 on the famed Blue Note label Moncur released his debut as a bandleader with the spectacular Evolution, an avant-garde release featuring the likes of McLean, Lee Morgan on trumpet, and the incredible Bobby Hutcherson on vibraphone. Also worth seeking out is his follow up, Some Other Stuff from 1964 with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock.

Moncur continues to record to this day, and has even released an album in 2007. A majority of the records he released as a bandleader are unfortunately unavailable anymore, although his two BYG-Actuel records are packaged together as a 2-CD set.

The Joe Harriott Quintet - "Beams"

Joe Harriott is an unsung hero of the free jazz movement that probably gets overshadowed because he wasn't an American. Ironically, it is European musicians today who are keeping the genre afloat.

A expatriate from Jamaica, he established himself in the London scene upon his arrival in Britain in 1951 and his work drew from influences such as Charlie Parker and the calypso music of his Caribbean home. Often compared to Ornette Coleman, he was one of the first bandleaders that brought attention to "The New Thing." Unlike Coleman, he fully embraced improvisation whereas most of Coleman's work at least had some compositional structure to it.

Movement, released in 1963 on Columbia, was Harriott's fourth full-length album as a bandleader and was released following his influential albums Free Form and Abstract. Unlike those two records, Movement was only half partially improvisational and half of it was hard bop much like his first album, Southern Horizons. "Movement draws upon both styles, the hard bop of [Southern Horizons] and the daring explorations into time, harmony, melody and rhythm of the [Free Form and Abstract]," explains Inconstant Sol.

In the mp3 of the week, "Beams," you can certainly hear some similarities between Harriott and Coleman, but a thorough listen shows that Harriott's style is much more fluid and (at least on "Beams") allows for more space between the musicians.

Free Form and Abstract have since been reissued on CD, but unfortunately Movement remains out of print like many other free jazz gems from the past.

Mass - "Ill"

After the breakup of Rema Rema, Gary Asquith, Mick Allen, and Mark Cox formed the art-damaged discordance of Mass with Danny Briottet. One of the earliest 4AD bands, they debuted with the "You and I" single in 1980, following it up a year later with the full-length Labour of Love. Asquith and Briottet went on as Renegade Soundwave, while Allen and Coxthe Wolfgang Press.

Not much information is available on this band, probably partially attributable to their short lifespan. What I do know is that Labour Of Love remains an unheralded classic of goth and post-punk that is most effective in its stark minimalism. Check out the track "Ill," available below as the mp3 of the week for our 1/16/08 show.

As a treat, here's our very first featured mp3 of Ceci n'est pas une spectacle de radio from today's broadcast:

In 1954 Clement Seymour "Sir Coxsone" Dodd opened Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica, where he recorded and released ska, rocksteady, and reggae by countless artists including a then-unknown Bob Marley.

I don't know much about this particular release, but Blue Beat Special was a rocksteady sampler of some sorts issued on the Coxsone Records label (a subsidiary of Island and then Trojan) in 1968 and was produced by Dodd himself. Today the Coxone singles and records are highly sought after by collectors.
